4 Possible Scenarios For the Remainder of the Jets Season

The New York Jets sit at 3-1 after the first quarter of the 2009 NFL season. Considered by most skeptics to be overachievers, diehards believe that Gang Green is for real. Here are 4 plausible scenarios that could play out for the team as they embark on the next 12 games.

The Fugazi Scenario - We have all seen this in the NFL before. A team starts off fiery hot because of an easy early part of the schedule or a couple of fluke plays that fortuitously fall in there favor. But in reality they are "Fugazi" which is a word that someone uses when they are describing a girls hang-downs as they pound Long Island Ice Teas at Neptunes in the Hamptons. The Jets actually played out this scenario perfectly last year, thanks to Brett Favre's incompetence and Eric Mangini's "first time ever playing Madden" game management. It's possible that since the Saints exploited Sanchez's weaknesses while also shutting down their running game, other teams could start to follow course. They could lose games like this Monday @Miami, @NE, at home vs. Indianapolis, and even against an underachieving Carolina or Jacksonville team and end up a disappointing 8-8.

The Sanchez is the Truth Scenario - Jets fans would cherish this one for not only the short term but for the long term. #6 had a difficult time trying to be better then Drew Brees' birthmark, which we know is near impossible. To give Mark his credit, the Saints are a top 5 team and that Dome is about as hard a place to play as the away team since those N'awlins folk are all hopped up on Jambalaya, Jazz, beignets, Lil Weezy, and girls sporadically flashing their hang-downs. Sanchize could potentially get stronger as a result of the experience and improve his game mitigating his current debilities. A critical aspect that the Jets have sorely missed this year has been Leon Washington. His game-breaking speed is something the Jets have not channeled effectively enough. If he is on the field scaring opposing defenses, it will take the pressure off of every other Jets player. The Jets currently have the same or better record then 10 of their 11 remaining opponents. If they play to the best of their abilities, no reason why they can't go 4 out of 6 against divisional opponents while maybe losing to the Colts or Falcons. This would give them an 12-4 record and a playoff birth.

The Same Old Jets Scenario - It's no secret that pretty much every team I like inevitably sucks and folds at the least opportune times. With the Jets, it has been Brett Favre throwing numerous interceptions, Doug Brien missing potential multiple game winning field goals, and Dan Marino fake spiking it are a few of the many ways that we have been tortured. No reason why this team wouldn't run out of gas and fall apart towards the end of the season starting now. Face it, Sanchez is a rookie and the Defense is a Revis or Harris injury away from being unable to effectively blitz. Plenty of games on the upcoming schedule that would prove to be troublesome for example, @Buffalo, @Tampa Bay or at home in week 17 vs. the rejuvenated Bengals. Plus you still have games against NE, Atl, and the Colts. This scenario could easily have the Jets at 6-10.

The Jets have Heart Scenario - Like all teams in the NFL, the Jets will face adversity throughout the next 3 months. How they handle it will determine the amount of perseverance and mental fortitude they actually possess. Rex Ryan's ability to motivate his team as well as game plan will be tested those weeks where - they need a road win after a tough home loss (perhaps @Buffalo after playing Carolina at home) or when they have just lost 2 in a row and they go up to New England and get a tough win in the snow. Sanchez undoubtedly will get crabs man-whoring in the meatpacking district continue to take his lumps but he will proverbially and literally get up after he gets knocked down to make the tough throws that epitomize a good, if not great, QB. Jets could beat the other wild card contender in week 17 (Cincinnati) and get final wild card spot with 9-7 record.

Which Scenario do you think is most realistic at this point in the season? Don't be shy!
